What Lark reads

To show battery levels, Lark reads: Bluetooth advertisements broadcast by nearby devices, which carry a model identifier, battery levels and whether a case lid is open; battery levels reported by Bluetooth accessories your Mac is connected to, such as a mouse or keyboard; the battery level of an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch over Apple's device link, by cable or Finder Wi-Fi sync; and your Mac's own battery.

All of this is read locally on your Mac, only while Lark is running.

What Lark stores

On your Mac: the settings you choose, the most recent battery reading for each device, and a rolling diagnostic log in ~/Library/Logs/Lark.

If you turn on anonymous usage in Settings, Lark also keeps a random install identifier on this Mac so daily counts can be added up without knowing who you are.

Permissions

Bluetooth is required — without it macOS cannot hand Lark the advertisements that carry battery levels, and the app has nothing to show.

Notifications are optional, and used only for the low-battery and finished-charging alerts you turn on yourself.

Accessibility and Automation are optional, and used only to switch AirPods noise control through the macOS Sound menu — the same thing Control Center does. Lark does not read your screen, your keystrokes, or any other app's contents.

What Lark never does

Anonymous usage is off unless you turn it on. When on, Lark posts only a random install id, app version, macOS version, and whether the event was a launch, heartbeat, quit, crash, or scanner state. No device names, Bluetooth addresses, UDIDs, or settings are sent. There is no advertising identifier, no third-party SDK, no profile, and no account. Nothing is sold.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version ships with the app and is posted at vopori.dev/lark. The date above always reflects the version you are reading.
